Tourmaline history

A long time ago, colourful pebbles were found in the riverbeds of Sri Lanka. They looked very much like the green tourmaline from Brazil. A Dutch merchant who saw the colourful pebbles immediately associated them with the words 'mixed gems' or 'Toramalli' in Sinhalese — and from that moment on, these special gemstones have been called Tourmaline.

Tourmaline is very colourful: red, pink, green, yellow, black, blue. Pink tourmaline is called rubellite, blue indicolite, green verdelite, black schorl. And there are also multi-coloured ones, such as green with pink tourmaline — this one has the apt name: watermelon tourmaline.
