Sugilite meaning and history

Sugilite was discovered a long time ago, in 1944, by Japanese geologist Ken-ichi Sugi in Japan, Canada, and India. This material was not particularly impressive – its color was a bit green and brown, and not really interesting. It wasn't until 1979 that the most significant find occurred in the Kalahari Desert in South Africa, when the mineral was found in a purple variety. From that moment on, global interest in this special stone began to grow, partly due to the large quantities found. Did you know that this beautiful purple stone is extracted as a byproduct from manganese mines?

Despite being discovered in the last century, it is a recent discovery compared to many other minerals and gemstones. This fact stimulates geologists to continue searching for new gemstones and minerals.

Royal Lavulite or Royal Azel

Not many people know that this beautiful purple stone is also known by the trade names Royal Lavulite and Royal Azel.

It wasn't long before the stone also caught the attention of Hollywood. The story goes that Elizabeth Taylor couldn't resist the deep purple color of a particular necklace. It wasn't long before the Royal Azel, or sugilite, necklace became part of her collection.

What's in a name: Royal Azel

The name Royal Azel was coined by a marketing man who wanted to give the purple material a more sexy name. He discovered that a nearby village was called Hotazel and thought this name fit perfectly. But the man had overlooked the fact that for locals, 'Hotazel' had a very different meaning – the high summer temperatures in this village often exceed 37°C, which led locals to call the village 'hot as hell'.

Sugilite stone effect

The meaning of sugilite is extra special as it brings spiritual wisdom and love. The flow of love aligns all chakras. Meditating with this special stone helps to find answers to your life questions.

Purple is the color of spirituality worldwide. This stone is associated with the zodiac sign Pisces and is perfect for the seventh, or crown, chakra.

Jewelry and sugilite carvings

Kiliaan Jewelry has several pieces of real sugilite jewelry in its collection. Did you know that this purple stone is also excellent for making beautiful carvings, cabochons, or beads? This is likely due to the stone's hardness, between 5.5 and 6.5 on the Mohs scale. The stone is opaque, so you won't often find it faceted.

Imitation

Sometimes charoite is mistaken for real sugilite, but there is a clear visual difference. Charoite has fibrous, swirling line patterns, while in sugilite, the different color nuances blend gradually. It is therefore important to buy the correct stone.

'Manganoan' sugilite

The higher the sugilite content, the more pronounced the purple color becomes. If it is also even and semi-translucent, then you quickly have a top-quality piece.

Sugilite and chalcedony

Sugilite can be a mix with chalcedony quartz. You can recognize this material by its more mottled appearance, which is often also slightly lighter in color. You also see combinations with minerals such as richterite, bustamite, or the dark brownish-black manganese oxide. White spots may indicate the mineral pectolite.

The mineral

Sugilite is a cyclosilicate mineral that is not commonly seen and about which little is written. The color varies from dark to reddish-purple. And very occasionally, you find it with high translucence which, due to high light transmission, has an even color, like, for example, a 'jelly bean'.
