For centuries, sapphire has been associated with royalty and romance. Could that be why Prince Charles gave Lady Diana an engagement ring with a Royal blue sapphire? It didn't bring her much luck, but this beautiful sapphire is getting a second chance as Kate Middleton's engagement ring.

Sapphire comes in all colors except red—because then it's a ruby. The different colors of sapphire are also called 'Fancy sapphires'. Did you know that sapphire even occurs in gray and black?

Besides royal blue, the Padparadscha is one of the most famous: the pink-orange sapphire from Sri Lanka. Padparadscha means lotus flower in Sri Lankan.

History

In ancient Greece and Rome, kings and queens were convinced that blue sapphire offered protection against envy and danger. In the Middle Ages, it was believed that sapphire symbolized heavenly blessings.
