Natural pearls form in an oyster or mussel. A pearl forms around an inclusion that is not native to the body. Slowly, layers of mother-of-pearl (nacre) form over this inclusion. With cultivated pearls, the natural process is followed, only a bead or tissue is inserted into the oyster by human hands. Beautiful, natural pearls are almost non-existent anymore, and if one is found, it is very precious.

Chemicals have a negative effect on the nacre of pearls. If this layer is damaged, pearls become dull. If you want to clean pearls, do so with a soft cloth and a mild soap or ask for professional help.
