Jasper, always different

Jasper is an opaque variant of chalcedony and comes in many colors. The unique and special thing about jasper is that the stone occurs in different colors and patterns. The names of the various types of jasper are often based on the patterns in the stone — Dalmatian jasper, ocean jasper, yellow jasper, green jasper, mookaite are just a few.

Many of these patterns are reminiscent of mountains, valleys, but the animal kingdom is also represented with names such as zebra jasper and Dalmatian jasper.

There is also a jasper named after the famous Spanish painter Picasso. You guessed it — the drawings in this jasper are reminiscent of small Picassos.

Ocean Jasper

An article about ocean jasper first appeared in 1922. The jasper itself was not yet widely reported, and its exact location remained unclear. The only thing that could be found in the archives about it was that the location had to be somewhere in Madagascar.

More than 75 years later, in the year 2000, the rediscovery of ocean jasper was the talk of the town at the major gem and mineral shows in Tucson, Arizona. The story went that a group of people, after 45 days of tireless searching along the coast of Madagascar, had luck and low tide with them, allowing the location of the ocean jasper to reveal itself to the world again.

Ocean jasper is still only found in two locations on the northwest side of Madagascar in the Analalava district — near the village of Marovato on the coast and slightly inland near Kabamby. The characteristic feature of this special jasper is its spherical patterns, and it is therefore also called orbicular jasper.

Dalmatian Jasper

The name jasper means spotted or speckled stone and it comes in many colors such as red, green, yellow, purple, black or even multi-colored. It is an opaque variety of quartz and/or chalcedony.

The different types of jasper often owe their name to their appearance, like Dalmatian jasper, or their place of origin, such as bruneau jasper, which was originally found in a canyon. But you also have willow creek or the jasper named after the famous painter Picasso.

Spiritual: Dalmatian jasper is a strongly protective stone and helps you to become more balanced. The stone is uplifting and provides energy. This jasper also protects against radiation and negative energy and is a helper to remove negative energy from your body.
